Chapter Nine

The next Friday, Callum stepped outside of the village hall and looked around the car park before doing a little dance.

‘You look funny, Dad.’

‘I know, and I don’t even care. Do you know what happened in there?’

‘Yup. The fairy magic worked.’ She smiled up at him happily.

‘That’s not exactly it, Sarah.’

‘Yes it is,’ she argued. ‘The committee said yes, and Santa will come and you’ll get lots of money to make the surgery better. Just like I wished in the fairy fountain.’

‘You wished for this?’

‘Of course. It’s important. And if you give the fairies a nice gift and ask very nicely, they help with important things. But you have to be very careful.’

‘So you don’t fall in the well?’

‘No, silly. Because fairies are tricky. You shouldn’t upset them.’

‘You probably shouldn’t upset anyone,’ Callum mused.

‘No. But ’specially not fairies.’ She hesitated when he headed towards the gate. ‘Daddy, are you in a good mood?’

‘A very, very good mood.’

‘So now is a good time to ask you something?’

He froze and looked at her suspiciously. ‘Like what?’

‘Like can I please sleep over with Summer soon? She’s going to be my cousin properly soon and we have lots of bridesmaid things we need to talk about and plan — she said it’s really hard but really fun being a bridesmaid, and it’s really very important.’

‘Very important, huh? Did you ask the fairies about it too?’

‘Of course not!’ Sarah seemed offended, and for the life of him Callum couldn’t work out why. Honestly, he sometimes felt like he and his daughter were from different planets, not just different generations. Though as soon as he’d thought it, he laughed. Trying to speak to her about glitter and fairies and princesses was as alien to him as “icky squelchy slugs” were to her.

‘So, you don’t ask fairies for things like sleepovers?’

‘Nope. That would be wasting a wish. I just asked Evelyn.’

‘You did? I hope you were polite.’ Callum wasn’t sure how he felt about his daughter taking on the organisation of her own social life — which was clearly far more complex and demanding than his own.

‘Of course she was.’ Evelyn came up behind them. ‘She’s always lovely and polite. And for the record, I agree. Assuming it’s all right with you, I’d love to get to know my new niece better. And it’s good for Summer to have more friends who aren’t . . . well . . . from the hospitals. And, of course, Jake would be there too.’

‘And I love Uncle Jake! And I really, really missed him when he was in America. I know he had to be there to look after Summer and Evelyn . . . but I missed him. Please, Daddy?’

‘Please, Dr Macpearson?’ Summer added her voice to the plea. One look at the two girls, their arms wrapped tightly around each other, and Callum was helpless to say no. And they did have a point: now they were going to be cousins — officially — it was only right that they spend more time together.
